One of the most exciting qualities of encaustic is its ability it gives artists to achieve a constructed surface beyond the capacity of other painting media. As a material wax crosses between 2D and 3D, providing unique opportunities to combine color texture and dimensionality. In this class, participants will explore a variety of materials that can enhance the textural and sculptural attributes. We work with accessible materials like plaster, joint compound and cardboard to create a range of relief surfaces. Fabrics like burlap and cotton batting can take on more structural characteristics once waxed. Impasto is a great material for building up accretion. With each surface special attention will be given to working temperature, fusing techniques and finishing methods.
